Prof. William D. Phillips

Nobel Laureate in Physics
NIST, Maryland, USA

Prof. William D. Phillips, the Man who frozen the Atoms, has been a leading researcher in the field of laser cooling of atoms at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), Maryland, since 1978 and was elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1997. He is internationally known for advancing basic knowledge and new techniques to laser-cool atoms to extremely low temperatures.

His experiments demonstrated that a beam of neutral atoms could be slowed down and cooled with radiation pressure from a laser and that atoms cooled by lasers could reach much lower temperatures than had been predicted theoretically. He developed the Zeeman slower, which is a scientific apparatus that is commonly used in quantum optics to cool a beam of atoms from room temperature or above to a few kelvins. His collaborative research with Claude Cohen-Tannoudji and Steven Chu led to the first observation of the Bose-Einstein condensate in 1995, an exotic new form of matter in which atoms all fall to their lowest levels and merge into a single quantum state. In 1997, Dr. Phillips received the Nobel Prize in Physics with Claude Cohen Tannoudji and Steven Chu for developing methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. He is currently serving as a Physicist at the National Institute for Standards and Technology. He is also a Distinguished University Professor at the University of Maryland. He is co-director of the NSF Physics Frontier Center at the Joint Quantum Institute. He is a Member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. He is also a member of the International Society for Science and Religion. What is more amazing about Phillips is that, along with his profound scientific commitment, he is also a man of deep religious belief.

Nobel Laureate Lecture

I think that what God wants from us is to have a personal relationship with Him and to have good personal relationships with each other. That’s why we’re here. … the relationship God wants us to have with Him is a kind of model…. It models for us the kinds of relationships we ought to have with each other.
